Franco-Italian cooking for true romantics.

The official ‘world’s most romantic restaurant’ isn’t just a Valentine’s Day pitch. Clos Maggiore is in the mood for love all year round, and to that end sports a fantastical decor reminiscent of a permanent Japanese cherry blossom festival in the hot-ticket glass-ceilinged courtyard area. The setting may be soft focus but there’s nothing whimsical about the cooking: ingredients are well sourced and skilfully handled, with easy-on-the-eye presentations adding to the lustre. Traditionalists will encounter plenty of decadent depth in silky-smooth chicken liver and foie gras parfait with red onion and ginger marmalade and toasted hazelnut bread. At main course, slow-cooked Berkshire pork neck and shredded ham hock are partnered with braised lettuce, capers, raisins and an intense pork sauce, while fish fans could be seduced by oven-roasted turbot with a casserole of Paimpol beans, mussels and courgette. Desserts are a beguiling proposition too – perhaps caramelised Valrhona chocolate sensation with burnt honey ice cream and Armagnac jelly.
